Turnover of retail trade enterprises continued to grow in January

According to Statistics Estonia, in January 2021, the turnover of retail trade enterprises was 618 million euros. Compared to January 2020, turnover increased by 7% at constant prices.

Jaanika Tiigiste, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that, in January, turnover grew in enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel as well as in grocery stores and stores selling manufactured goods. “The biggest growth was reported by enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel, as their turnover grew by 11% year on year. Turnover increased by 8% in stores selling manufactured goods and by 4% in grocery stores,” added Tiigiste.

In case of manufactured goods, the biggest increase in turnover at 48% was recorded in stores selling via mail order or the internet. Turnover increased by 19% in other specialised stores selling predominantly computers and their accessories, books, sports equipment, games, toys, etc., by  9% in stores selling household goods and appliances, hardware and building materials, and by 7% in stores selling second-hand goods and in non-store retail sale (stalls, markets, direct sale). Turnover decreased by 21% in stores selling textiles, clothing and footwear, by 3% in other non-specialised stores selling predominantly manufactured goods (department stores), and by 2% in pharmacies and stores selling cosmetics.

In January, compared to December, the turnover of retail trade enterprises fell by 17%. This is a common trend following Christmas and year-end sales. However, according to the seasonally and working-day adjusted data, turnover increased by 2% compared to December.

The statistics are based on the VAT declaration data of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board. Statistics Estonia performs the statistical activity “Financial statistics of trade enterprises (monthly)” for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications in order to determine how the Estonian economy is doing.
