A person might experience social exclusion if he or she lives at risk of poverty, or below the subsistence minimum, is severely materially deprived or lives in a household where the working-age members have very low work intensity. A low income might contribute to social exclusion: a person cannot afford dwelling essentials or durables, such as to pay rent or utilities, eat nutritious food, take a holiday away from home or buy a car, washing machine or phone. The government approved the development plan of Statistics Estonia for 2018–2022 at its cabinet meeting today. The greatest change in the new strategy period is transforming Statistics Estonia into a national data agency – an office that offers data from different sources, support when using data as well as classic official statistics.

In 2012, Statistics Estonia will collect the data from nearly 40,000 economic units. From now on, it is possible to check on the web site of Statistics Estonia whether the economic unit has been picked into the sample and has an obligation to submit the data.

Today, on 16 November, the geographic information systems (GIS) and geography day is held at the National Library of Estonia from 10:00 to 17:00. Among other things, visitors can see the map applications created for the Population and Housing Census which begins at the end of this year.
