Census data show that 58% of the population was employed at the end of 2021, which is 6 percentage points more than 10 years ago. The increase is mainly due to persons of retirement age, but also slightly to the unemployed and students.

Robert Müürsepp, team lead of national accounts at Statistics Estonia, said that the preliminary estimate shows signs of improvement in the Estonian economy in the fourth quarter of last year. “There was no more major recession, as the seasonally and working-day adjusted GDP remained unchanged from the third quarter of 2024. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2023, the economy contracted only slightly,” noted Müürsepp. Statistics Estonia will publish GDP data for the fourth quarter of 2024 on 3 March . According to Statistics Estonia, 1,365,884 people live in Estonia as of 01.01.2023, which is 34,088 persons (2.6%) more than at the same time a year ago. In 2022, there were 11,646 births and 17,315 deaths in Estonia. 49,414 persons immigrated to Estonia and 9,657 persons emigrated from Estonia, therefore, immigration exceeded emigration fivefold.

Helle Bunder, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the volume of production in manufacturing decreased in 2024 as a whole but there were signs of improvement at the end of the year. “Manufacturing output started to grow in October and November but fell a little in December,” explained Bunder. Last year, production volume declined in two thirds of the 23 manufacturing activities. Looking at the larger industries, there was an increase in output in the manufacture of food products (5.1%), rubber and plastic products (0.7%) and other transport equipment (11.3%), and also in the repair

Johanna Linda Pihlak, analyst at Statistics Estonia, noted that the biggest decline at 4% was registered in the turnover volume of stores selling manufactured goods. In grocery stores, the volume of turnover was down by 3%. “However, the turnover volume of enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel increased by 2% last year,” added Pihlak. Retail trade volume turned to growth again in the last month of the year. “The turnover of retail trade enterprises was €1 billion in December 2024, and compared with the same month in 2023, turnover volume was up by 1%,” Pihlak pointed out

According to Statistics Estonia, 337,000 tourists stayed in accommodation establishments in June 2023, the same as in June last year. The number of foreign tourists increased, while the number of domestic tourists decreased.
