According to Statistics Estonia, 1,365,884 people live in Estonia as of 01.01.2023, which is 34,088 persons (2.6%) more than at the same time a year ago. In 2022, there were 11,646 births and 17,315 deaths in Estonia. 49,414 persons immigrated to Estonia and 9,657 persons emigrated from Estonia, therefore, immigration exceeded emigration fivefold.

According to Statistics Estonia, more than 481,000 tourists stayed in accommodation establishments in July 2023, up by 1% from the same month a year earlier and 43% more than in June 2023. Compared with July last year, accommodation establishments hosted more foreign tourists and fewer domestic tourists.

Census data show that 58% of the population was employed at the end of 2021, which is 6 percentage points more than 10 years ago. The increase is mainly due to persons of retirement age, but also slightly to the unemployed and students.

According to Statistics Estonia, in September, exports of goods increased by 30% and imports by 37% year on year. In the third quarter, exports grew by 34% and imports by 35%.

Helle Bunder, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that, in February, there was an increase in total industrial production as well as in the volume of manufacturing production. “The rise in manufacturing production was mainly due to the 7.3% increase in the manufacture of food products, where output was boosted significantly by the manufacture of milk and manufacture of other food products, including sugar, sugar confectionery, prepared meals, tea and coffee, and spices,” explained Bunder. Lauri Veski, team lead of consumer price statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that the exchange prices of electricity had the biggest influence on the harmonised index of consumer prices compared with the previous month as well as with February last year. “Compared with February 2024, prices have increased across almost all categories of goods and services.
