According to Statistics Estonia, in 2011 the ratio of research and development expenditures to the gross domestic product rose upon a novel level – 2.41%, surpassing for the first time the EU mean of 2.03%.

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2010 the ratio of research and development (R&D) expenditures to the gross domestic product reached a novel level – 1.63%, a year earlier the respective indicator was 1.43%. The improved result was significantly influenced by investments in the technological development made in the oil industry.

Among the three main sectors, output increased by 16.9% in mining and by 16.3% in electricity production but decreased by 7.8% in manufacturing.
