Export of services takes place when a resident of Estonia sells services to a non-resident, incl. to an economic unit that belongs to the same enterprise group but is located abroad. For export of services, it is not necessary to cross country borders, i.e. services can be provided in Estonia or abroad.

According to Statistics Estonia, in June, Estonia’s exports of goods amounted to 1.6 billion and imports to 1.9 billion euros. Compared with June 2022, exports of goods decreased by 14% and imports by 13% at current prices. The trade deficit in June was 271 million euros, which is 33 million euros less than in the same month last year.

In July, fuel exports and imports increased trade

According to Statistics Estonia, in July 2018, the exports of goods increased by 27% and imports by 18% compared to July 2017. The growth in trade was affected the most by a significant increase in trade in mineral products (fuel additives, shale oil, motor spirit and heavy fuel oils). Mineral products trade increased in both quantity and value, exports tripled and imports doubled.

According to Statistics Estonia, in July 2022, Estonia’s exports of goods increased by 13% and imports by 22% compared with July 2021. Re-exports from Estonia grew by 43%; exports of domestic goods remained at the same level year on year.

The rise in services exports slowed down in the third quarter

According to Statistics Estonia and Eesti Pank, in the third quarter of 2023, Estonia’s exports of services grew by 1% and imports by 3% at current prices compared with the same quarter of 2022. Sales of services to non-residents totalled 2.8 billion euros and purchases of services from non-residents amounted to 2.2 billion euros. The balance of foreign trade in services was in surplus by 557 million euros.
