Population census: the average family size in Estonia has gone up

According to the results of the register-based population and housing census of 2021, there are 341,995 families in Estonia, of which almost half, or 49%, are two-member families. Compared with the previous census, there are fewer families, but the number of people living in them has risen. 154,625 families (or 45%) are raising minor children and 16% of the population lives alone.

According to the revised data of Statistics Estonia, 1,328,976 persons lived in Estonia on 1 January 2020, which is 4,156 persons more than at the same time a year earlier. In 2019, the population figure decreased by 1,302 persons due to negative natural change, but increased by 5,458 persons as a result of positive net migration.

From 1782 to 1858, 7 countings of the population were organized which could be considered forerunners of modern population censuses. The Statistical Committees, established in Estonia and Livonia in 1863, considered it necessary to conduct censuses according to the principles laid down at international conferences on Statistics.
