According to Statistics Estonia, in the 2nd quarter of 2013 compared to the same quarter of the previous year, the total production of Estonian construction enterprises in Estonia and foreign countries grew 0.4%. In Estonia the construction activities increased 4%, but in foreign countries the construction volumes decreased nearly by a third.

In the 2nd quarter of 2013, the production value of construction enterprises amounted to 557 million euros, of which the production value of building construction was 326 million euros and the production of civil engineering totalled 231 million euros. Compared to the 2nd quarter of 2012, the volume of building construction in real terms stayed on the same level, but the volume of civil engineering increased by 2%.

The growth on the domestic construction market was caused mainly by upturn of new building construction and was supported also by civil engineering. The repair and reconstruction work in building construction stayed on the level of the previous year.

The construction volume of Estonian construction enterprises in foreign countries has decreased for the second quarter in succession in comparison with the same period of the previous year. Both, the volumes in building construction as well as in civil engineering decreased. The share of the construction volumes in foreign countries accounted for 8% of the total volume of construction volume in the 2nd quarter (11% in the 2nd quarter 2012).

According to the data of the Register of Construction Works, in the 2nd quarter of 2013, the number of dwelling completions was 475, i.e. the same than in the same period of 2012. More than a half of completed dwellings were situated in one-family, two-family or terraced houses, that was the reason why also the average useful floor area of dwellings was large – amounting to 137 square metres per dwelling. The majority of completed dwellings were situated in the neighbouring rural municipalities of Tallinn. There is still a demand for new dwellings with good location and quality on the construction market. In the 2nd quarter of 2013, building permits were granted for the construction of 834 dwellings, i.e. 100 dwellings more than in the 2nd quarter a year ago. The most popular type of building was one-family house.

In the 2nd quarter of 2013, the number of completed non-residential buildings was 186 with the useful floor area of 124,600 square metres – this was primarily made up of new industrial, storage and commercial premises. Compared to the 2nd quarter of 2012, the useful floor area as well as the cubic capacity of completed non-residential buildings increased.
