The decline in retail trade turnover continued in January

According to Statistics Estonia, in January, the turnover of retail trade enterprises was 800 million euros. Compared with January 2022, turnover decreased by 7% at constant prices.

Johanna Linda Pihlak, analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that, in January, turnover decreased in enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel as well as in grocery stores and stores selling manufactured goods. “Year on year, the biggest decline (9%) occurred in the turnover of enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel. Turnover fell by 7% in stores selling manufactured goods and by 4% in grocery stores,” added Pihlak.

Among stores selling manufactured goods, turnover fell the most, by 12%, in stores selling household goods and appliances, hardware and building materials. Turnover decreased by 11% in other specialised stores selling predominantly computers and their accessories, books, sports equipment, games, toys, etc., by 4% in stores selling second-hand goods and non-store retail sale (stalls, markets, and direct sale), by 3% in other non-specialised stores selling predominantly manufactured goods (i.e. department stores), and by 2% in pharmacies and stores selling cosmetics. There was an increase in the turnover of stores selling via mail order or the internet (up by 3%) and stores selling textiles, clothing and footwear (up by 2%).

Compared with December, the turnover of retail trade enterprises fell by 21% in January. This is a customary decline following Christmas and year-end sales. According to the seasonally and working-day adjusted data, the turnover in January decreased by 1%.

The statistics are based on the VAT declaration data of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board. Statistics Estonia performs the statistical activity “Financial statistics of trade enterprises (monthly)” for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications in order to determine how the Estonian economy is doing.
