In February, electricity and motor fuel had the biggest impact on the consumer price index

According to Statistics Estonia, in February, the consumer price index rose by 0.9% compared to January and by 0.6% compared to February 2020. Goods were 0.6% cheaper and services 2.7% more expensive than in February last year.

Viktoria Trasanov, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that, compared to February 2020, the consumer price index was affected the most by 26.7% more expensive electricity that reached homes and by cheaper motor fuel. “Diesel fuel was 12.8% and petrol 4% cheaper. Among food products, the biggest increase occurred in the prices of baby food (11.6%) and flour mixes (9.1%), while the biggest decrease was recorded in the prices of fresh fish (26.5%), potatoes (19.5%) and olive oil (9.3%),” explained Trasanov.

Compared to January, the consumer price index was affected the most by the rising prices of motor fuel. In February, the price of diesel fuel rose by 6.4% and the price of petrol by 3.1% compared to the previous month. Food products also had a bigger impact, as dairy products were 2.1% and fresh vegetables 5.1% more expensive.
