Presentation of the most thorough book on the Estonian population
Today, on 29 December, Professor Emeritus Ene-Margit Tiit, the Head of Methodology of the 2011 Population and Housing Census, presents her latest book “Eesti rahvastik. Viis põlvkonda ja kümme loendust” (The Estonian Population: Five Generations and Ten Censuses). The presentation starts at 13:00 at the Rahva Raamat bookstore in the Viru Keskus shopping centre.
“I had been planning to write a book about the Estonian population for years, because this information has never been published before. It is fitting that the book is launched on 29 December 2011 – the day that marks 130 years from the first census in the territory of Estonia,” said Professor Ene-Margit Tiit, the Head of Methodology of the 2011 Population and Housing Census.
In the first part of the book, Professor Tiit discusses the ten previous censuses, focusing on their organization and results. The second part of the book looks at how the Estonian people have lived over five generations, while the third part deals with demography in general. In the final section, Professor Tiit talks about the coming 2011 Population and Housing Census.
“There are no other books that would offer such an extensive overview of the Estonian population over five generations. As the most thorough publication so far, it outlines the history of censuses in Estonia. We can now say that the story of the development of the Estonian people in the last 130 years is finally available in a tangible, printed format,” said Mr Priit Potisepp, Director General of Statistics Estonia.
As of today, people can buy the book “Eesti rahvastik. Viis põlvkonda ja kümme loendust” from the Information Centre and online shop of Statistics Estonia. From January, the book will also be available at Rahva Raamat and Apollo bookstores.
In 2011, the Population Census will be conducted for the eleventh time in the territory of Estonia. Previous censuses were carried out in 1881, 1897, 1922, 1934, 1941, 1959, 1970, 1979, 1989 and 2000.
This year’s census will be carried out from 31 December until 31 March next year. The electronic Population and Housing Census or e-census, where the permanent residents of Estonia can fill in questionnaires on the Internet, will take place during the first month (31 Dec 2011 to 31 Jan 2012). Those who do not participate in the e-census will be visited by an enumerator in the period of 16 February to 31 March 2012.
