The decline in retail trade turnover accelerated in November
According to Statistics Estonia, in November 2023, the turnover of retail trade enterprises was 876 million euros. Compared with November 2022, turnover decreased by 9% at constant prices.
Johanna Linda Pihlak, analyst at Statistics Estonia, noted that the decline in retail trade turnover in November was most affected by stores selling manufactured goods, as their turnover decreased by 12% year on year. “Turnover was down in most retail activities. Only the turnover of pharmacies and stores selling cosmetics increased by 3%,” added Pihlak.
Among stores selling manufactured goods, the biggest decrease at 21% was registered in the turnover of stores selling via mail order or the internet. Turnover fell by 17% in other specialised stores selling predominantly computers and their accessories, books, sports equipment, games, toys, etc., by 13% in stores selling textiles, clothing and footwear, by 10% in stores selling household goods and appliances, hardware and building materials, by 9% in other non-specialised stores selling predominantly manufactured goods (department stores), and by 8% in stores selling second-hand goods and non-store retail sale (stalls, markets, and direct sale).
Compared with November 2022, the turnover of grocery stores decreased by 2% and the turnover of enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel by 11%.
In November compared with October, the turnover of retail trade enterprises decreased by 1%. According to the seasonally and working-day adjusted data, turnover remained at the previous month’s level.
In the first eleven months of 2023, the turnover of retail trade enterprises decreased by 8% compared with the same period of 2022.
The statistics are based on the VAT declaration data of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board. Statistics Estonia performs the statistical activity “Financial statistics of trade enterprises (monthly)” for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications in order to determine how the Estonian economy is doing.
