According to Statistics Estonia, in 2024, fish and crayfish farms sold 963 tonnes of commercial fish and crayfish, for a total of 7.8 million euros. Compared with 2023, the sold quantity of fish farming production grew by 5%. The quantity of fish roe sold was a little over 21 tonnes, which is the highest amount ever.

Last year, the quantity of commercial fish sold by fish farming enterprises increased by 45 tonnes compared with 2023. The quantity of farmed fish was in decline in the years 2019–2022 but has been rising again in the last two years.

Anton Kardakov, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the increase in food prices has now reached the fish farming sector. “The average price per kilogram of farmed fish was up by 30% and exceeded 8 euros,” noted Kardakov.

Rainbow trout is still the most farmed and sold fish species in Estonia. The sold quantity of rainbow trout has increased steadily in recent years. 835 tonnes of rainbow trout was sold last year, accounting for 87% of the total quantity of farmed fish sold. In monetary terms, this amounts to nearly 6.9 million euros.

Kardakov said that the quantity of fish roe sold in Estonia last year was the highest ever. “21 tonnes of fish roe was placed on the market in 2024. This is about two times more than in 2023 and is also slightly more than the quantity of fish roe sold in 2021, the previous record year. The value of sold fish roe was nearly 680,000 euros, while the average price per kilogram was 11% lower than the year before,” added Kardakov.

0.5 tonnes of crayfish was placed on the market in 2024, which is almost the same as in 2023. The value of sold crayfish was 17,000 euros. In addition to rainbow trout and crayfish, there are other fish species farmed and sold in Estonia, such as tench, European eel, African sharptooth catfish, carp, wels catfish, sturgeon (Siberian and Russian sturgeon), grass carp, etc.
