The places where people live have been recorded in one way or another for centuries. Previously, the place of registration could have been a church, municipality government, city address board, housing board or the Population Register. In recent decades, developed countries have found that register data are usually more accurate than survey data, and so population censuses have also begun to use them. Back in 2011, eight European Union countries conducted the census on a register basis: in addition to the Nordic countries, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Slovenia.

In the Population and Housing Census, which starts at the end of the year, among else, people will be able to give an assessment of their health. Health questions in the same wording were also included in the census ten years ago, which is why the results will provide an overview of Estonian people’s health and how it has changed in a decade.

At the end of the year, on 28 December, the Population and Housing Census, conducted every ten years, starts in Estonia. Everyone living in Estonia is invited to complete an online questionnaire for the census by 22 January 2022. In February, census takers will call or visit the people for whom filling in the questionnaire is mandatory.

Statistics Estonia invites all Estonian residents to fill in the census e-questionnaire by Saturday. So far (by January 16), 450,000 persons, or around 35% of the Estonian population, have been enumerated based on the short five-minute questionnaire.

The EKOMAR questionnaire has been designed to obtain more detailed data on the financial indicators of enterprises in order to assess Estonia's economic growth and prepare business overviews. The reference period for the EKOMAR questionnaire is a calendar year . In order to facilitate completion, the questionnaire is designed to be as similar as possible to the annual report. The annual report (AR) filed with the Business Register is one of the most important datasets used in the production of statistics. Statistical thresholds In 2024, the statistical threshold for the dispatches of goods is 350,000 euros (last year, it was 270,000 euros). It means that, in 2024, Intrastat data have to be submitted by those enterprises whose turnover of goods dispatched to European Union countries exceeded 350,000 euros in 2023. If enterprises exceed the statistical threshold in 2024, they will also have to submit Intrastat data.
