According to Statistics Estonia*, 93.2% of households in Estonia have an internet connection at home. The number of households with an internet connection has increased by 13,000 compared with the previous year, when there were 533,300 such households. There are also more users of e-commerce.

Statistics Estonia wishes to make the transmission and reporting of data more automatic in order to decrease the data submission burden of enterprises. We have prepared guidelines for those who wish to start using the statistical database API or to use their business software for data-based reporting, a project created to decrease the administrative burden by enabling automatic data exchange.

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2019, the expenditures on research and development (R&D) in Estonia amounted to 453 million euros, which is 24% more than in 2018. The share of R&D expenditures in the gross domestic product was 1.61%, making it the highest share in the last five years.

Statistics Estonia uses about 100 questionnaires to collect data for indicators about Estonian economy and society. The goal of data-based reporting is to provide enterprises and other organisations with the option of automatic data submission – directly from accounting software. Secure data interoperability Statistics Estonia received 1,099,300 euros via the innovation fund for the project “Secure data interoperability between sectors”.
