According to Statistics Estonia, 22.5% of Estonia’s population lived at risk of poverty and 3.5% in absolute poverty in 2022. Compared with 2021, the share of people living at risk of poverty decreased by 0.3 percentage points and the share of people living in absolute poverty increased by 2.1 percentage points.

169,300 foreign and 134,900 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in May. Similarly to May last year, the bigger share of accommodated guests – 56% – were foreign tourists and 44% were domestic tourists. Monday, 28 February, marked the end of the second stage of the Population and Housing Census where data were collected from people living at the addresses included in the mandatory sample. The survey component of the census has ended, but data collection from registers continues until July, to ensure that all residents of Estonia are counted.

Buses transported 41.6 million passengers and travelled 39 million kilometres in the first quarter. According to Statistics Estonia, in April, Estonian accommodation establishments served 59,000 tourists, which is over three times more than in April last year. The numbers of foreign and domestic tourists both increased.

Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that 133,800 foreign and 117,500 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in April 2025. The number of foreign tourists has shown considerable growth over the last year but has not yet fully recovered from the slump a few years ago. “Compared with April 2024, the number of foreign tourists increased by 16%. According to Statistics Estonia, in January 2022, the total production of industrial enterprises increased by 1.4% compared to January 2021. Production increased by 1.8% in manufacturing and by 3.9% in mining. Energy production was almost at the same level and grew by just 0.2% year on year.
