Births and deaths are a normal part of life. They also have an impact on the number of population of a country. Around a half of deaths in Estonia are caused by diseases of the circulatory system, followed by cancers. The number of deaths caused by cancers gradually increases with age. The causes of death are very different by age. Almost a half of the deaths of children and young people are a result of accidents. Deaths caused by accidents decrease with age. The data on the deaths of Estonian inhabitants help to predict population change and implement measures to prevent early deaths.

The production of short-term death statistics was prompted by the 2020 coronavirus crisis. The chart shows the weekly death statistics for 2010–2025. The data for 2010–2023 are final, and the data for 2024 and 2025 are preliminary data from the population register and will be revised. According to Statistics Estonia, on 1 January 2022, the population of Estonia was 1,331,796, which is 1,728 persons more than at the same time a year ago. In 2021, there were 13,272 births and 18,587 deaths in Estonia. Based on migration data, 19,524 persons immigrated to Estonia and 12,481 persons emigrated from Estonia.

Statistics Estonia will start to publish each week the number of deaths of Estonian inhabitants in the previous week and the breakdown by sex and age group. The data are updated on Tuesdays for as long as it is necessary to assess the impact of the emergency situation.

According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, on 1 January 2022, the population of Estonia was 1,328,439, which is 1,629 persons less than at the same time a year ago. In 2021, there were 13,138 births and 18,445 deaths in Estonia. Based on the data on registered migration, 12,280 persons immigrated to Estonia and 8,602 persons emigrated from Estonia.

According to the revised data of Statistics Estonia, on 1 January 2021, the population of Estonia was 1,330,068, which is 1,179 persons more than the year before*. Last year, the population figure decreased by 2,602 persons due to negative natural increase but increased by 3,782 persons as a result of positive net migration.
