Statistics Estonia’s wages and salaries application was updated with 2020 data

Statistics Estonia’s wages and salaries application now includes wages data for the first quarter of 2020. Also, median wages for 11 more groups of occupations were added.

At the end of April, Statistics Estonia presented a wages and salaries application, which until now showed 2019 median gross wages and salaries for 110 groups of occupations. Since then, Statistics Estonia has continued developing the application, adding data for the first quarter of 2020.

The groups of occupations displayed in the wages and salaries application were also updated. “We added groups of occupations in which users showed more interest, but we left out the occupations in which under five persons worked in Estonia as well as the ones that users found confusing,” explained Statistics Estonia’s data scientist Kadri Rootalu. The following groups of occupations with their median wages were added to the application:

  • supply and distribution managers;
  • life science professionals;
  • mechanical engineering technicians;
  • manufacturing supervisors;
  • office supervisors;
  • production clerks;
  • cleaning and housekeeping supervisors in offices, hotels and other establishments;
  • shop supervisors;
  • structural metal preparers and erectors;
  • bus drivers;
  • lifting truck operators.

The wages and salaries application uses data from the employment register (TÖR) and Estonian tax declaration form TSD annexes 1 and 2. The application shows median gross wages and salaries of registered full-time employees. Median wage is such that half of the employees in the population under consideration earn less and the other half earn more.

The application allows comparing wages received by employees, or wages paid by enterprises, with the median wages of the group of occupations. The largest target group is, however, enterprises that have entered data in the employment register.

In cooperation with the Gender Equality and Equal Treatment Commissioner and researchers at the University of Tartu and Tallinn University of Technology, in autumn, a development will be added to the application, which will make it possible to compare wage data by gender.
