According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, the population of Estonia on 1 January 2023 was 1,357,739, an increase by 2% (or 25,943 people) compared with a year earlier. Ene-Margit Tiit, an expert in population statistics, took a closer look at how many ethnic Estonians live here and how many Estonians there are in the world.

This year, for the first time, Statistics Estonia distributed the deadlines of the EKOMAR questionnaire over a longer period and, depending on the economic activity of the enterprise, the deadline fell in the period of 1–8 July. Out of the 8,000 enterprises that were to submit the questionnaire, 44% submitted EKOMAR in time.

According to Statistics Estonia, during the three summer months in total more than half a million foreign tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, which was 3% less than at the same time in the previous year.

The number of tourists in accommodation establishments exceeded also the first half-year result of 2008, i.e. the best year of the past decade, by 10%.

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 4th quarter of 2008, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were 13,117 kroons and the hourly gross wages and salaries were 79.58 kroons. Compared to the 4th quarter of 2007, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were by 6.9% and the average hourly gross wages and salaries were by 9.9% higher. Since 1993, the growth of monthly gross wages and salaries was last as small as that in the 1st quarter of 2004 (6.5%).

According to Statistics Estonia's survey on information technology, the use of artificial intelligence-based technologies has risen significantly in 2024 compared with the previous year, and cyber security has become increasingly important. 5% of enterprises used at least one AI technology in 2023, whereas in 2024, this figure has risen to 14%. Of large enterprises, 10% said they had experienced a disclosure of confidential data.

In 1993, the share of under-30s among all people getting married was between 60% and 70%, whereas in 2023, only 24% of the newly married men and 34% of women were under 30 years old, according to data from Statistics Estonia.

The production value of Estonian construction enterprises in 2024 was 3.9 billion euros, including 2.4 billion euros’ worth of building construction and 1.5 billion euros’ worth of civil engineering. Compared with 2023, the volume of building construction fell by 9% and the volume of civil engineering works (roads, bridges, port facilities, pipelines, communication and electricity lines, sports fields, etc.) by 2%. Merike Sinisaar, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, pointed out that construction volumes decreased for the third year in a row. “The downturn in the domestic construction
